The nineties
- The IT and Information Decade
1 January 1998 the Road Legislation in Denmark was changed. In the new law the state road network was reduced, so it by 1 April 1999 comprised of 1,650 km of which 870 km was motorway. The new law gave the Road Directorate the full authority and responsibility of the operation of the state roads.
The number of cars increased from 1,902 mio. in 1990 to 2,190 mio. in 1999. The traffic also increased during the nineties, ending up in the traffic numbers in 1998 being more than 100% larger than in 1970.
''The Great Motorway H'' was finished on 27 June 1994 with the opening of the section between Århus and Randers. It was nearly 40 years after the opening of the country's first motorway, the Helsingør Motorway, which opened in 1956.
During the extension of Denmark's oldest motorway, the Helsingør Motorway, information technology was used during the construction period. And it was in 1997 that the Road Directorate opened the first internet website, and an intranet for the employees.

- The Development Decade, with built-in balance
The speed in which the society has developed the last 60 years, can be seen in the development within the road sector. Demands for transport have been steadily increasing and so has the demands for the speed of the traffic flow. This development is expected to continue. Today, there is an increasing demand for effective and direct access to transport. Service on the journey is also in demand - we are all used to a high level of information.
Furthermore, none of us want the noise, pollution and accident exposure which the increased amount of traffic could bring. The Road Directorate will also in the coming years work on the development of the road network and of the tools which can help bringing traffic and road network into an acceptable state in these fields. And the number of accidents must be reduced. Demands, wishes and opinions from the citizens and involved land owners will act as great asset for the Road Directorate's future work.
Especially in this decade there will be demands for an even higher flexibility to meet the demands of the fast changing society. Many paradoxes are built into the society's demands and wishes for transport and new roads, and to balance whitin these demands is our challenge in the new millenium.
The Municipality Reform of 2006 dissolved the structure of the counties, and the Road Directorate took over approx. 2,000 km of the former county roads. From 2007 the Road Directorate bears the responsibility of approx. 3,800 km state roads, and alongside these extended responsibilities approx. 300 former county employees were transferred to the Road Directorate. Six area centres opened in January 2007 as ''the citizens' open doors to the Road Directorate''.
